Among all of my friends, only one has green eyes. Her eyes are the first things you notice when you first meet her. Green is the rarest eye color in the world. However, in some countries, they are common. Lots of people in Iceland have green eyes. In fact, over 80% of Icelanders have either green or blue eyes.
Scientists used to think that eye color is a simple genetic trait. They now believe it is a complex one. This means that the genetic trait for eye color is determined not by a single pair, but by multiple pairs of genes interacting with each other.

1. What Are the Eye Pigments?
Before we dive into why some eyes appear green, let's get one thing straight. There are no green pigments in the eye!
Let's define a couple of things:
- Eye Pigmentation: The coloring of a person's eyes, especially when abnormal or distinctive.
- Iris: This is the part that surrounds the pupil and contains the color. The iris controls the dilation and constriction of the pupils. If you shine a light into someone's eye, his or her iris will contract. This reduces the size of the pupil. This function of the iris is important in terms of regulating the amount of light that enters the eye.
- Lipochrome: Lipochrome is a yellowish pigment responsible for the golden tone in amber eyes.
Eye color depends very much on the amount of pigment on the surface of the iris. It also depends on the way light is scattered inside the eye. Two pigments involved in eye color, which we'll explore further, are Melanin and Lipochrome.
2. What Is Melanin and Why Do Green Eyes Appear Green?
Melanin is a brown pigment that is also responsible for the color of your skin and hair. Before melanin takes effect, the iris usually has a bluish tint to it. This is the reason most babies are born with blue/bluish eyes. Melanin starts creeping into the eye as the baby grows up (around the sixth month after birth).

What Does Melanin Have to Do With Having Blue-Eyes?
Blue-eyed individuals have little melanin and lipochrome on their irises. The blue eye color is caused by a low melanin concentration and the way light is scattered in the iris. This phenomenon of light scattering in the iris is known as Rayleigh scattering.
How Does Rayleigh Scattering Affect the Eye?
Rayleigh scattering happens in the presence of very little melanin. Longer wavelengths of light pass straight through the eye, then they are absorbed at the back of the eye. Shorter wavelengths (blue wavelengths) are reflected and randomly scattered by the opaque layer of the iris. The blue wavelengths are responsible for the blue of the iris. This doesn't work for brown eyes because they have much more melanin. This absorbs the light.

What Does Melanin Have to Do With Green and Brown Eyes?
People with green eyes have a bit more melanin than people with blue eyes. The green color is from a combination of a blue hue from Rayleigh scattering and "yellow" from the yellow pigment called lipochrome.
The higher the melanin concentration in the iris, the darker the eye color will be. People with brown eyes have high concentrations of melanin on their irises than people with blue or green eyes. That means that everyone with dark eyes have blue ones underneath all their pigments.
Green eyes have more melanin than blue eyes, but less than brown eyes.
3. Are Green Eyes Genetically Determined?
We used to believe that eye color is a simple genetic trait. For example, it was thought that two parents with blue eyes can never have an offspring with brown eyes. This has been repeatedly shown to be wrong. Why?
What Is a Polygenic Trait?
Scientists now believe that eye color is a polygenic trait. That is, a complex trait determined by multiple genes. There are several genes thought to play a role in human pigmentation.
When it comes to genes for melanin production, one that stands out is OCA2. Scientists believe this gene is probably one of the most important genes in determining the amount of melanin to be produced in the iris.
What Is the OCA2 Gene?
The OCA2 gene contains instructions for melanin production. You may look at it like a recipe for melanin production. As we all know, sometimes there is an unexpected change in part of a gene. This is called Mutation. It results in an altered or damaged gene. Some mutations are severe, such as "growing an extra leg" Other mutations are unnoticeable, such as those for green or blue eyes.
Mutation in the OCA2 gene can cause melanin production to shutdown completely, such as in albinism. Or it could be less severe, only reducing the production down to a minimum, such as for green or blue eyes.
4. Are There Any Personality Traits Associated With Green-Eyed People?
Here is an interesting theory you may have already heard about. It is completely based on observation:
People often associated certain eye colors with specific personality traits. Some say that people with blue eyes tend to be kind and sweet. If it is true that people often associated certain eye colors with specific personality traits, then you could wear contacts to alter the way people perceive you. Maybe you should try some blue contacts. It might make you look a little "sweeter." Nevertheless, the connection between eye-color and behavior is not seen as legitimate by the scientific community. Also I could and would definitely provide pictures for a study ... there's a lot of disagreement for example about what is green vs. a hazel eye ... what is blue what is green and where that line falls.
The documented change of eye color of each individual over age progression would be helpful and very interesting. Most likely helpful for these studies. Does the amount of melanin ever DECREASE ... Meaning does a green eye ever turn back to being more blue Or would this be something having to do with site issues such as Cataracts , making the Eye look more cloudy and lighter colored with age etc. etc.

Ha ha I should also add that all five children were born and had the most vibrant blue eyes until around the age of five or six, and again, ALL 5 are now green eyed.. Some have a bit of bright blue in the eye striped in , but they are all green eyed. It will be fun to see as they get older if any of them turn back to being true blue-eyed oh that would be something ! Haha

Also, there was a comment by a poster named Allison Kendrick below and she mentions that she was blue-eyed and blond haired when she was a child but then became green eyed. What she mentions is exactly what is all over my family my cousins etc. my sisters children. My sisters children have the most gorgeous blue eyes and platinum blonde hair when they were little and now they are dark dark blonde and they have green eyes solid gorgeous green eyes. They are of Dutch / Scottish Irish / English & Italian descent & much German some Switzerland is there in the ancestry. There is a major change from the age of about 10 to the age of 20 in eye & hair color.. from blonde to much darker and very blue to solid green eyes. I could name & post pics of probably 20 individuals living who have changed this way. I was also a blue/ clear grey eyed child but by say 10 my eyes were definitely all green.

I have 5 children. Their father has very nice true blue eyes with the white streaks through them like a Prussian blue eye and a teenie bit of yellow in the middle .
His parents are both some version ( on the darker end ) of a green eye (neither could be considered blue or brown eyed)... his mother has no blue in her eye just green and darker green , and his father has brownish green/ not quite hazel( no real brown ) eyes. His father's parents were dark brown eyes (his paternal grandmother )& very solid blue eyes ( his paternal grandfather.) his father's brother has definitely hazel brown eyes/ medium level of darkness. His mothers parents were blue eyes ( not very dark but definitely not green) with no brown or anything else in the middle just clear light blue eyes( maternal grandmother) and brown eyes just BROWN NOT DARK( maternal grandfather.)
Together my husbands parents has two very blue eyed children with eyes like their paternal grandfather. In a very short period during his late teens my husband's blue eyes did appear to be very cold grey , but ever since they have been brighter blue and the healthier he is the more blue they are.
I have two very brown eyed parents. Definitely look just like both of them!! But I am solid green eyed. Just a teenie tiny bit of brown in the middle. My sister is blue eyes with green in the middle and one sister is dark brown eyed like my father. There is a VERY dark blue eyed grandfather on my mothers side.
My mothers mother was brown eyed. One great grandmother my father's side was beautiful blues. So there are definitely blue eyes both sides and they have passed.
All 5 of my children have NO brown whatsoever. They are all green/blue eyes sometimes appearing clear grey in two of my girls , but nobody is a true blue eye.

My mom and dad both have brown / hazel eyes, both their dads had brown eyes, both their moms had blue eyes. My sister (20) has blue eyes, me (23) have green eyes.

I have green eyes, fluorescent in the sun and a lush green in the shade, dirty blonde hair that naturally highlights and orangey gold skin when I bask in the sun. Not sure why they're so interesting, I assume considering because they're my own and I've seen with the energy my entire life. One eye has a brown freckle in the midst of the green. They seem to enchant people when looking into their eyes. The color is just the veil of the pupil, the window to the soul of us illusively beautiful beings.

I have bright red hair, freckles, pale skin and dark green eyes. My mother has brown eyes and black hair while my father has a light mix of red and blonde hair with blue eyes. None of my mother's kids got her dark traits. Except I did inherit her widows peek which makes my hair part really easy. I've been told that I have really gorgeous hair by a lot of people.

I have my dad and half sisters eyes. My mom has hazel eyes. My eyes are a foresty and lush green color they have a light brown or yellowish middle. My hair is a light brown or dirty blond. It's hard to say. But I have natural highlights. There ya go

My eyes are bright green in the morning, gray, green in the afternoon, and gray at night. i am NOT intelligent btw. i like to draw and read. i am fourteen. i don't think people notice my eyes but i can't really say because i'm not very sociable. i have 7 other siblings so i won't bother writing all the colors of their eyes. my hair is either blonde or brown, nobody can figure it out. i'm pretty confusing. ;) see ya. bye.

My daughter has beautiful green eyes with very dark green rings around them. She had very blue eyes until she was about 3 years old, but then they changed colors seemingly overnight! My husband and I have brown eyes, and we were surprised that she had blue eyes when she was born. The surprise continued when they changed color. My dad had green eyes, by the way.

I have green/grey eyes, the grey is more predominant in florescent lighting, cloudy skies, also noticed when wearing pink or grey clothes. Rest of the time they're green with slight blue tint, occasionally brown specks will present themselves. Lineage that I'm aware of is Scottish, Irish and Cherokee. And yes, I do many compliments on my eyes. And just learning that only 2% of the world's population have true green eyes makes me feel more unique. I used to get upset that there were so many songs written about blue and brown eyes. Only in the last decade have I really started hearing songs about green eyes that weren't related to something with Halloween.

I have blue green eyes lol they are so weird. When i was a baby they were blue, then they turned hazel, then only green brown. Now they're blue green, and turning into a dark blue. I'm so confused. Is that supposed to happen? I'm a teen, so maybe?
